Chapter Eight

The next week blurred together as Peter tried to distract himself with the new business and his hunt for a house.

If only buying a house didn’t make him think again about the curvy woman with an auburn flip at the tip of her short hair.

“What do you think, Mr. Wellington? Great schools. Excellent community.”

Peter shook off the thoughts about schools and community. At this point, a house was just a place where he would lay his head each night.

He took another chance to study the hardwood floors, the newly renovated kitchen with professional grade appliances, and the open floor plan with a fireplace in the corner.

He imagined Gillian with her oversized armchair in the corner by the fireplace, her afghan over her lap, reading a book and smiling to herself over one of the passages she’d just read.

“Mr. Wellington?”

He turned back to the realtor. “Yes, sorry. You said there were five bedrooms?”

She nodded. “And three bathrooms.”

Peter stuffed his hands in the pockets of his jeans. “Unfortunately, I don’t need such a big home. Perhaps a city loft would be a more suitable selection.”

The realtor checked her phone, presumably checking for whatever options were available. “There are some beautiful lofts downtown. That would cut down on your commute considerably.”

He didn’t respond, just looked at the house, a large Colonial house in one of the older parts of the city. He’d nearly canceled the appointment after his argument with Gillian the week before, but something had kept him from ignoring the house altogether.

With its wide, open floor plan and the sweeping staircase in the entrance, he could almost picture it filled to the brim with children. Having grown up in a flat in London where square footage was at a premium and private, well-maintained yards of grass were few and far between, he was almost tempted to purchase the home regardless of its likely occupancy.

Still, practicality won out. He just kept any questions about what he would do with all that time he’d saved from his commute to himself.

Two hours later, after he’d toured a half-dozen lofts in the city and still found himself ambivalent, his phone rang. “Wellington.”

“Peter. Cindy wasn’t able to get in touch with Gillian. She didn’t happen to tell you when we’re supposed to be at the caterer to try the menu, did she?”

Every instinct in Peter’s body stood on end. “No, she didn’t. Is there a problem?”

Wind rustled against the microphone in Richard’s cell phone. “Not a problem, per se. Cindy and I just thought we were supposed to be at the caterer’s today, but everything’s closed up. We’ve tried calling the business, we’ve tried calling Gillian, but you’re the first person who answered.”

In the background, Cindy said something that caught Richard’s attention. “Uh, just kidding. Cindy just got a call back from the caterer. Looks like everything’s okay now.”

Peter couldn’t relax. Gillian was so attentive to every detail, he couldn’t imagine there being a reason she wouldn’t answer her phone. He checked his watch. Especially at two-fifteen on a Friday afternoon.
